Understanding Cat Behaviour
“Meow” seems to be the only word or sound that cats use to communicate with its human mate. However, it can mean anything, from pleasure to hunger according to its pitch and the cat's general actions. And there are sounds to watch out for.
A purr is a low and short vibrating sound produced when inhaling and exhaling deeply. A purring cat with eyes half closed means it is happy, contented and at ease with a situation. It is possible that a cat induces a purr to calm itself when distressed.
A hiss is a sharp airy sound emitted by cats when in danger. The general stance of a cat is low and ready to strike.
The tail is also a good indicator in checking the mood of cat. A tail held up high and relaxed shows that it is pleased and happy, while a jerking and slightly bent tip means is in an aggressive mode.
A cat pawing its owner (as if pushing with its paws but with claws not fully distended) is being affectionate. Usually it is accompanied with purring.
