Freya , the Viking goddess of fertility, love, and war, was also linked with cats. It was customary to give a kitten to a bride as charm signifying fertility and romance.
Cats were also very much associated with witches in the Middle Ages. It was a time when cats where viciously killed, the purpose of which was to eradicate witches. Because of this reference to witches, cats are said to possess nine lives.
